Origin Of Jainism

The very first Tirthankara is said to be the Rishabhanatha. He is also known as Adinatha. He is always considered as the creator of Jain teachings. He is respected and honoured for introducing the basic principles of Jain Dharma. Which emphasizes refraining and avoiding violence and practising self-discipline, non-violence and dharma. However, the person who is mostly referred to by the people and mostly associated with giving shaping Jainism in the most valuable form is the 24th and the final Tirthankara known as Lord Mahavira.

Who Is Mahavira?

The Lord Mahavira is also known as Vardhamana. He lived in the 6th century BCE. He is credited for formalising the principles of Jainism. These principles guide followers of Jainism today. His teachings include the core beliefs which Jains follow today those are non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-stealing (asatya), Charity (brahmacharya), and non-attachment (aparigraha).

Although Mahavira is considered the most important figure when discussing Who Founded Jainism, he essentially did not "create" the Jain Religion in the traditional sense. Instead of that he brought Jainism to life and further developed the teachings of the original creator particularly Rishabhanatha.So, whenever the question comes to ‘Who Founded Jainism’ some people say Mahavira and some say Rishabhanatha.

Early stages of Jainism Existence

Lord Mahavira was born in 599 BCE in the region of present-day known as Bihar, India. Lord Mahavira was a follower of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha). After leaving his worldly life at the age of 30, Lord Mahavira practised extreme severity of challenges for 12 years, and achieved Kevala Jnana (omniscience) and became a spiritual teacher. His role in shaping Jainism is critical. He structured the faith’s practices. He established conventual communities, and brought into existence the Five Vows ahimsa, satya, asatya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha in their modern form.

The historical existence of Jainism cannot be allocated solely to one individual. Instead, it has been evolved by the teachings of hundreds and numerous Tirthankaras. They are believed to have a guided path of humanity to move towards liberation and escape from the cycle of birth and death. Therefore, when it comes to asking "Who Founded Jainism," the answer includes both Lord Rishabhanatha as the first Tirthankara and Lord Mahavira as the key figure responsible for shaping Jainism into an organised religious tradition which exists today. 

Jainism which existed before Mahavira, Lord Mahavira  is often seen as the historical person who transformed the religion from a scattered collection of teachings to a complete one spiritual path which is now followed by millions.
